CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina attorney has been named head of an association of former federal prosecutors.

The National Association of Former United States Attorneys elected Bart Daniel as its president during an annual conference in San Diego last week.

Daniel served as South Carolina’s U.S. Attorney from 1989 to 1992.

He directed the investigation and prosecution of Operation Lost Trust, one of the nation’s largest and most successful public corruption prosecutions. It resulted in 27 convictions, including 17 members of the South Carolina Legislature, along with other public officials.

In 1991, he received the Attorney General’s Flag Award, the highest award given to a U.S. Attorney.

While in private practice, Daniel has defended several high-profile clients, including former state Treasurer Thomas Ravenel and House Speaker Bobby Harrell.
