SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - State leaders working to make Utah’s air healthier are recommending creating three new non-attainment areas that fall below the federal standards for ozone pollution.
Gov. Gary Herbert proposed the new attainment areas to the EPA based on an analysis by Utah’s Department of Environmental Quality.
It shows the federal standards are not being met in Salt Lake and Davis counties, as well as portions of Weber, Utah, Duchesne and Uintah counties.
Unlike many pollutants, ozone is not emitted directly into the atmosphere but is formed when sunlight reacts with other chemicals in the air, primarily nitrogen oxide.
Bryce Bird, director of the Utah Division of Air Quality Director Bryce Bird told The Salt Lake Tribune (https://tinyurl.com/jkkpeaf) that vehicles alone are responsible for nearly half of Salt Lake County’s emissions of nitrogen oxide.
