WHEELING, W.Va. (AP) - The Robert C. Byrd Intermodal Transportation Center in Wheeling will operate at a loss for the current fiscal year, with taxpayers covering an estimated $81,000 deficit for the facility.

The Intelligencer reports (https://bit.ly/2dm9T5L) the center’s total operating cost for the coming fiscal year is expected to be $403,005.

Projected revenues are $254,000.

The city’s total expected contribution to the Intermodal would be $149,005, but because it owns the land the center sits on, the $68,105 land-lease expense paid by Ohio Valley Regional Transportation Authority and the Federal Transit Administration to the city will offset a portion of this, bringing the shortfall to $81,000.

Wheeling City Manager Robert Herron says he’s hopeful that new activity downtown, like The Health Plan opening its corporate headquarters there, may turn things around.
