NEW YORK (AP) - Acting Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez will continue to head the office for the rest of the term.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo made the announcement on Monday.

Gonzalez was chief Assistant District Attorney and has been leading the office ever since former Brooklyn DA Kenneth Thompson died of cancer last Sunday.

Thompson became Brooklyn’s first African-American district attorney in 2014. The 50-year-old Democrat expanded an initiative that reviews cases for potential wrongful convictions.

In a statement Monday, Gonzalez pledged to continue Thompson’s criminal justice reforms.
