PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - Yankton Middle School math instructor Beth Kaltsulas has been honored as South Dakota’s Teacher of the Year.

State Education Secretary Melody Schopp announced the award late Thursday. Kaltsulas will now be a candidate for National Teacher of the Year, an award given out at the White House.

Kaltsulas has taught in the Yankton School District for 30 years. She has mentored 13 student teachers, runs a daily math academy and piloted a math class for special education students.
