PARRIS ISLAND, S.C. (AP) - More than 600 Marines are graduating after 12 weeks of basic training and being united with family and friends for the ceremony at the Recruit Training Depot on Parris Island.

Marine Corps spokesman Capt. Greg Carroll says the group includes 510 males and 118 females.

Guests are being granted access to Parris Island Friday morning at 8 a.m. The graduation is scheduled for 1 p.m. to afford guests time to arrive.

Normal family day activities are usually scheduled a day prior to graduation but were canceled this week due to the recovery efforts following Hurricane Matthew.

Carroll says some 6,000 recruits and Marines on Parris Island were evacuated to a Marine installation at Albany, Georgia, because of the storm and they returned earlier this week.
