PUEBLO, Colo. (AP) - Firefighters are close to fully containing a wildfire that destroyed eight homes in southern Colorado.

The Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office says the fire near Beulah is 95 percent contained, and crews are working to snuff out 16 interior hotspots. The fire, which was reported Oct. 3, scorched more than 8 square miles.

Nearly 2,000 residents were ordered to leave their homes after the fire quickly spread in windy, dry conditions. Investigators believe it was somehow sparked by a Colorado Department of Transportation excavator doing maintenance work in a ditch.
