NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Newark authorities say they’ve captured a man who allegedly attacked an off-duty police officer last year and beat another man who came to the officer’s aid.

Lazaro Suarez was arrested without incident Monday morning at a Newark home. The 31-year-old city man faces an aggravated assault charge and two weapons counts.

Suarez allegedly attacked a 29-year-old Port Authority police officer on Sept. 9, 2015 and then beat an off-duty EMS worker who tried to help the officer. Suarez then allegedly tried to disarm the officer, and the officer’s gun discharged during the struggle.

Bystanders soon restrained the officer, allowing Suarez to flee the scene.

The officer required stitches to his face. The EMS worker was treated for undisclosed injuries.

It wasn’t known if Suarez has retained an attorney.
