BROCKTON, Mass. (AP) - A suspended Massachusetts state trooper has been sentenced to four months in jail for his role in a 2013 head-on collision that killed a mother and daughter returning home from a Red Sox game.
John Basler was convicted by a jury Tuesday of drunken driving, reckless operation and carrying a firearm while intoxicated. He was acquitted of motor vehicle manslaughter.
The 28-year-old Basler was off duty and driving in Plymouth shortly after midnight on Sept. 22, 2013, when a car driven by 64-year-old Susan Macchi apparently drifted into the oncoming lane on a wet road. Susan Macchi and 23-year-old Juliet Macchi, both of Carver, died.
Prosecutors recommended a sentence of five years during Basler’s sentencing hearing Wednesday.
