GRAFTON, Vt. (AP) - Voters in the southern Vermont communities of Windham and Grafton have rejected a proposal to build 24 wind turbine towers on a mountain ridge in the two towns.
In Grafton, it was 235 to 158 and in Windham it was 181 to 101, both against the Stiles Brook Wind Project.
Project developer Iberdrola Renewables had vowed to honor the town’s wishes. Spokesman Paul Copleman says the company is disappointed, but will drop its plans for the project unless and until the towns reconsider their opposition.
Grafton Select Board member Skip Lisle, a wildlife biologist and project opponent, calls the project a terrible idea and says he hopes it’s dead for good.
