WINDER, Ga. (AP) - A man has been charged with murder in the death of a high school student who authorities say tried to intervene in an argument involving one of the suspect’s sons.

The Barrow County Sheriff’s Office tells news outlets that 45-year-old Roberto Arellano, of Winder, fatally shot 18-year-old Jose Tovar-Campuzano on Friday night outside the suspect’s home.

Responding deputies found Arellano in a driveway, holding pressure on the victim’s gunshot wound to try to keep him alive. The East Jackson Comprehensive High School senior was taken to a hospital and died during surgery.

Arellano told investigators he was defending his son, whom Tovar-Campuzano and two others threatened to beat up. Deputies determined Tovar-Campuzano was actually attempting to mediate the dispute between the son and another person.
