ARNOLD, Pa. (AP) - A 16-year-old girl has died at a hospital hours after being shot in the chest in the basement of her boyfriend’s western Pennsylvania home, though police say he’s not a suspect.

Akira Waters was wounded about 5 p.m. Monday in Arnold, about 20 miles northeast of Pittsburgh. She’s from Avonmore, another town in Westmoreland County.

Police Chief Eric Doutt says Waters’ 19-year-old boyfriend was the only other person home when Waters was shot, but says he’s been cooperative and was released after questioning. Doutt says police were looking for another young male who had been in the home earlier Monday.

Police also haven’t recovered the weapon.

Water was taken to UPMC Presbyterian hospital in Pittsburgh where she died during surgery about 7:30 p.m..

An autopsy was scheduled Tuesday.
