NEW YORK (AP) - A man convicted of attempted murder and assault for firing at a New York City police officer in 2014 has been sentenced to 35 years in prison.

Twenty-two-year-old Christian Mosquera, of Queens, was sentenced Monday after a jury convicted him last month.

Authorities arrested Mosquera in New Jersey about a week after the shooting incident in June 2014.

Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said officers on patrol during the early morning hours in the Elmhurst neighborhood of Queens heard gunshots and saw Mosquera with a gun.

Brown said the officers told him to drop the gun but he instead turned and fired before fleeing.
