CLENDENIN, W.Va. (AP) - Police say a West Virginia man has been fatally shot after threatening officers with a shotgun.
Kanawha (kuh-NAW) County sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. Brian Humphreys says in a news release that 56-year-old Russell Elswick of Clendenin died Saturday.
Humphreys says deputies responded to a report of someone shooting at a residence. It was determined Elswick was prohibited from possessing firearms and a warrant had been issued for him for missing a court date.
The statement says deputies spoke to Elswick through a window in a converted barn where he lived and he refused to come outside. Humphreys says Elswick was shot after he threatened the deputies and pointed a shotgun at them.
The race of Elswick and the deputies weren’t known. Humphreys didn’t immediately respond to an email Sunday.
