BRIDGTON, Maine (AP) - The longest stretch of Maine’s annual moose hunt is underway in southern and coastal parts of the state.
There are fewer moose to be hunted this year, because the state cut back permits by 675. The move was made to accommodate nature fans who like to view the giant animals in the wild.
Still, the state gave out 2,140 moose permits in the annual moose lottery. Hunters are able to pursue the animals in five wildlife management districts concentrated in southern and coastal parts of the state until Nov. 26.
Hunters are limited to one moose per year.
Wildlife biologists have said winter ticks are hurting moose populations in New England. Maine gave out nearly twice as many moose permits three years ago. Hunters’ rate of success has also decreased.
