STURBRIDGE, Mass. (AP) - State police have shot and killed a bear they feared might cause an accident at a busy highway intersection.

The Telegram & Gazette (https://bit.ly/2f1jJOY ) reports that the bear wandered onto Route 20 in Sturbridge near the ramp to Interstate 84 at about 4 p.m. Thursday.

Motorists called police to report the bear.

A trooper nearly struck the bear with his cruiser but was able to scare the animal back into a swampy wooded area.

But the animal came back onto the road, and when troopers were unable to chase it away a second time it was shot so it did not cause an accident.

Environmental Police also responded to the scene.
