FREDERICK, Md. (AP) - An advisory panel is holding a public meeting on recommendations for protecting the Monocacy River corridor in Frederick and Carroll counties.
The meeting is in Taneytown (TAW-nee-town) Monday night with the Monocacy (mah-NAH’-kah-see) Scenic River Citizens’ Advisory Board.
The board made scores of recommendations in a draft management plan released last month. It’s the first update since a state scenic river designation in 1974.
The document makes 77 recommendations for preserving historical and cultural resources, protecting the river ecology and enhancing recreational opportunities.
They include creating a community-based “riverkeeper,” similar to the existing Potomac Riverkeeper Network. The network uses public campaigns and lawsuits to fight water pollution.
The Monocacy is a Potomac River tributary.
