KINGSBURY, N.Y. (AP) - Police say the body of a painting contractor for the state Department of Transportation has been recovered from the Champlain Canal after a scaffold accident sent five workers into the water.
The victim was identified as 41-year-old Rahssan Smith of Albany. Authorities say the five workers fell into the canal 50 miles north of Albany when a scaffolding platform beneath the bridge malfunctioned and tilted Friday morning.
The Glens Falls Post-Star (https://bit.ly/2fnngpm ) reports that police and dive teams responded to the scene of the accident after another bridge worker dialed 911 shortly after 11:30 a.m.
Washington County Director of Public Safety Glen Gosnell says state and county divers helped four workers out of the water and searched for 90 minutes before recovering Smith’s body.
