NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A man has been indicted for murder in the shooting death of his ex-girlfriend’s new boyfriend earlier this summer.

The Times-Picayune reports (https://bit.ly/2fBdp2E) 25-year-old Deiontay Helmstatter was indicted Thursday on a second-degree murder charge 26-year-old Harold Jenkins’ death.

Police said Jenkins was found shot to death inside his SUV on July 16 in the St. Roch neighborhood. Helmstatter was arrested later that day.

Police said Helmstatter’s ex-girlfriend said that she saw Helmstatter kill her new boyfriend. The woman told police that Jenkins had just dropped her off and was driving away when Helmstatter approached and shot him through the driver’s side window.

Helmstatter has also been indicted on a charge of illegal possession of a firearm by a felon.

Online jail records do not list an attorney for Helmstatter.
