HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. (AP) - The city of Hendersonville is preparing to get water from the French Broad River.

The Times-News of Hendersonville reported (https://bit.ly/2fJafZL) the city hopes to avoid imposing mandatory water restrictions as dry weather continues in western North Carolina.

The city set up a line to the river in 2010 and would use a temporary pump to get the water to its treatment facility.

Utilities Director Lee Smith said in order to pump water through that line, a state of emergency must be declared by the governor. Smith expects Gov. Pat McCrory to do that soon because of the drought conditions in the western part of the state.

The U.S. Drought Monitor reports the western third of North Carolina is either in a drought or abnormally dry.
