GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) - A Grand Forks-based North Dakota National Guard unit has been notified that it likely will be called to duty in the nation’s capital.

The 1st Battalion of the 188th Air Defense Artillery Regiment expects to mobilize next March for a yearlong mission helping provide security for Washington, D.C. The unit that also has detachments in Fargo and Bismarck served a similar mission in 2013 and 2014.

More than 200 air defense soldiers would work with other Defense Department agencies to protect airspace around the capital. The unit is expected to replace one from Florida.

It would be the 11th deployment for the 188th since 2004. The unit also has served in Kosovo, Afghanistan and Iraq.
