The police force in the Canadian town of Kensington is warning residents not to drink and drive or else be forced to listen to Nickelback in the back of a cop car.
The Kensington Police Service made the announcement in a Facebook post over the weekend directed at those who are “dumb enough to feel they can drink and drive.”
“[W]hen we catch you, and we will catch you, on top of a hefty fine, a criminal charge and a years driving suspension we will also provide you with a bonus gift of playing the office’s copy of Nickelback in the cruiser on the way to jail,” the statement read. “Now, now, no need to thank us, we figure if you are foolish enough to get behind the wheel after drinking then a little Chad Kroeger and the boys is the perfect gift for you.”
Constable Robb Hartlen told CNN the department doesn’t actually hate the Canadian rock band.
“We are just using a different approach to get an age-old message communicated,” he said. “As long as it starts the ’Don’t drink and drive’ dialogue, we’re happy with that.”
Saturday’s Facebook post was accompanied by a photograph of an unopened cassette tape of Nickelback’s 2001 album “Silver Side Up.”
The department said it hasn’t had to play the cassette for any criminals yet.
“So please, lets not ruin a perfectly good unopened copy of Nickelback,” the post read. “You don’t drink and drive and we won’t make you listen to it.”
