CHICOPEE, Mass. (AP) - The two men who died when their vehicle crashed into a perimeter security barrier at a western Massachusetts Air Reserve base have been identified as Chicopee residents.
Authorities say the speeding vehicle crashed through a fence and into a concrete barrier at Westover Air Reserve Base in Chicopee just before 11:30 p.m. Tuesday.
The Hampden district attorney announced Thursday that the driver, 29-year-old Travis Cerez, and his passenger, 39-year-old Javier Zengotita, were pronounced dead at the scene. Both were civilians with no known connection to the base.
Their Kia Soul burst into flames when it struck a barrier. Base fire crews were on the scene within minutes to douse the flames.
State police are investigating. Authorities say there is no evidence that it was an intentional attack.
