DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - A Des Moines newspaper carrier is being credited for saving a man from a burning home.

The Des Moines Register reports (https://dmreg.co/2gSJMtA ) that Doug Ribeiro was delivering the Register early Tuesday morning on the city’s east side when he came across a burning home. The 55-year-old Ribeiro says the front door was open, and it appeared no one was home.

He and another carrier began warning neighbors of the fire when Ribeiro said he heard yelling coming from the burning house.

He rushed in and found a man on the floor, then helped the man out of the house.

Firefighters believe the fire started when the man began smoking while using an oxygen tank. The man suffered severe burns and is being treated at a Des Moines burn unit.
