SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - An Orem teenager accused of stabbing five other students will undergo a mental competency review.

The teen made a brief, initial court appearance Tuesday, where a judge set another hearing for Feb. 14 to review the boy’s competency.

The 16-year-old has been charged with attempted murder. Police say he brought a martial arts weapon and knives with him to school on Nov. 15 and planned to kill people.

Prosecutors say he hit one student with the weapon and used a knife to stab four other classmates before he was subdued by a school officer.

The teen is charged as a juvenile. The Associated Press is not identifying him because of his age.
