Trump hails Castro’s death on Twitter; during campaign he promised to reverse Obama’s Cuba policy

President-elect Donald Trump did not hold back when acknowledging Saturday the death of Cuban dictator Fidel Castro. He used an exclamation mark.

Mr. Trump tweeted: “Fidel Castro is dead!”

The exclamation matched the celebration of Cuban exiles in Miami’s Little Havana.

Castro died Friday in Havana at the age of 90.

During the campaign, Mr. Trump’s business dealings with Cuba were scrutinized after reports that he violated the U.S. trade embargo on Cuba. Mr. Trump vehemently denied the allegation.

“I never did business in Cuba,” he said in an interview.

Mr. Trump’s stance toward Cuba evolved over the course of the campaign. He started out saying he supported improved relations with Cuba but that he would have negotiated a “better deal” than President Obama, who made history in 2014 by restoring diplomatic relations with the communist island nation.

By the end of this year’s presidential campaign, however, Mr. Trump promised to reverse Mr. Obama’s Cuba policy, a move that appealed to Cuban-American voters in South Florida.
