President-elect Donald Trump said Tuesday that he is giving “serious consideration” to appointing retired neurosurgeon and former GOP presidential candidate Ben Carson to run the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
After meeting with Mr. Carson at Trump Tower, Mr. Trump revealed the possible Cabinet pick in a tweet: “I am seriously considering Dr. Ben Carson as the head of HUD. I’ve gotten to know him well—he’s a greatly talented person who loves people!”
Mr. Carson, who went from bitter primary rival to a prominent Trump supporter and surrogate during the race, recently said that he did not intend to join the Trump administration.
Speculation about a role for Mr. Carson, however, had focus on secretary of health and human services, not HUD secretary.
Mr. Carson was born into poverty in Detroit and rose to become a world-famous pediatric neurosurgeon. For years, he has used his inspirational story to advocate for using educational and self-reliance to break the cycle of poverty in urban communities.
