President Obama will award the presidential medal of freedom next week to a group of 21 people that includes Hollywood stars, progressive activists and NBA champions such as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Michael Jordan.
The recipients will include TV show host Ellen DeGeneres, actor Robert DeNiro (who has said he is sickened by the election of Donald Trump), actor Tom Hanks, Bill and Melinda Gates, music legends Bruce Springsteen and Diana Ross, “Saturday Night Live” creator Lorne Michaels, actress Cicely Tyson and broadcaster Vin Scully.
“The presidential medal of freedom is not just our nation’s highest civilian honor — it’s a tribute to the idea that all of us, no matter where we come from, have the opportunity to change this country for the better,” Mr. Obama said. “From scientists, philanthropists, and public servants to activists, athletes, and artists, these 21 individuals have helped push America forward, inspiring millions of people around the world along the way.”
