Voters logs in Oregon that have been cross-checked with anti-Trump protest arrests reveal a striking statistic: 62 percent of suspects failed to cast a ballot on Nov. 8 or were not registered to vote.
At least 69 of 112 people arrested by the Portland Police Bureau since Republican President-elect Donald Trump’s victory over Hillary Clinton did not participate in the political process. A local NBC affiliate revealed the finding after seeing data provided by police and Multnomah County Elections officials.
Individuals who made their first court appearance Monday were told they would not be charged — yet — until overworked officers have enough time to complete paperwork and analyze video evidence.
“The DA’s office has been so busy covering these protests every single night, officers just haven’t had a chance to get [paperwork] done,” reporter Pat Dooris said Monday.
The local station found that while 25 suspects did vote, another 34 did not return a ballot, and 35 were not registered. Reporters were still trying to verify the voting status of the remaining individuals.
“I was protesting because it’s a community type of thing, and the whole city was kind of agreeing on it,” said Thij Bowen, 18, who voted for Mrs. Clinton. “It’s been going on for about five days already, and I think it will be going on for a few more days.
