House Speaker Paul D. Ryan said the hubbub over incoming White House chief strategist Stephen K. Bannon is a distraction, saying President-elect Donald Trump will be judged not on his personnel but on what he does for the economy and government.
“The president is going to be judged on his results,” said Mr. Ryan, who was one of Mr. Trump’s frequent critics during the campaign but has become his most vocal advocate in the week since the election.
The Wisconsin Republican said the goal of the House next year will be to turn Mr. Trump’s agenda into accomplishments, and Mr. Ryan said there’s no daylight between the president-elect and congressional Republicans on the big issues of restraining government and kick-starting the economy.
As for specifics, Mr. Ryan said those plans are still in the works.
