House Speaker Paul D. Ryan told Americans upset over the election of Donald Trump to calm down, saying Monday that he understands the surprise of a Trump win after polls suggested otherwise.

“Relax, things will be fine,” Mr. Ryan told AM-1380 radio in Wisconsin.

The GOP’s leader in the House, who had been critical of Mr. Trump during the campaign, has been effusive in his praise since the election, crediting the president-elect with tapping into a pool of voter angst missed by other politicians and helping down-ticket Republicans win their races.

Moving forward, Mr. Ryan said lawmakers will try to clear up some outstanding bipartisan bills this year in a lame-duck session of Congress, then tackle the big issues next year, when the GOP will control the White House and both chambers on Capitol Hill.

And he said for those worried about what a Trump presidency might mean, they can find reassurance in looking at the House GOP’s roadmap for policies on repealing Obamacare, trying to move people from welfare to work and cutting taxes.

“Take a breath and take a look at the actual substance people are talking about,” Mr. Ryan said.
