GATLINBURG, Tenn. (AP) - Crews have wrapped up a major restoration project on Alum Cave Trail in the Great Smoky Mountains.

WBIR-TV reported Friday that (https://on.wbir.com/2fWFsd1) the official ribbon-cutting is just days away for the revitalized 5.5 mile trail that stretches from Newfound Gap Road to the top of Mount LeConte.

National Park Service Project Manager Josh Shapiro says crews have spent the last couple of years working to make the trail much smoother after removing rocks and ruts in the path.

Other improvements have included adding stone channels to improve drainage and reduce clogs, restoring bridges to provide better access for emergency crews to reach injured hikers, and replacing cables that act as banisters along the steepest and ice-prone portions of the trail.

The stone steps through Arch Rock are another major update.
