SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - New York state is increasing its investment in the Syracuse area’s future as a center for drone technology.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo says Thursday another $30 million will be spent to create a 50-mile flight traffic management system between Syracuse and Griffiss International Airport in Rome. The corridor will feature sensors and other equipment to assist in the research and development of unmanned aircraft.
Local and state officials believe the central New York region has the potential to become a leading hub of drone technology. Cuomo, a Democrat, says the money is a “strategic investment” in the area’s economic future.
State officials say NASA researchers will assist in the development of specifications for the new air traffic management system.
