SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Utah Gov. Gary Herbert has hired the editor and publisher of the Deseret News as his new deputy chief of staff.
Herbert announced Thursday that Paul Edwards was stepping into the role and would focus on policy and communications for the governor’s office.
Edwards has served as editor of the Mormon-church owned Deseret News since 2011. He says the newspaper walled him off from any election-related news coverage since the governor’s office first approached him about the job in September.
The Deseret News announced Thursday that Edwards would be replaced by Doug Wilks, the managing editor of the news division for the newspaper and KSL Broadcasting, which is also owned by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
