LOS ANGELES (AP) - Los Angeles firefighters have rescued a worker who was impaled by metal bars at a downtown construction site.

The Fire Department says the 27-year-old man was impaled through the torso by at least two inch-thick pieces of rebar as he worked atop a building Tuesday afternoon. Authorities say a panel fell and knocked him onto the bars.

A Fire Department Quick Response unit arrived and cut the bars. A construction crane was then used to lower the man about 20 feet to the street.

He’s in critical condition at a hospital.
