ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) - Forest fires continue to burn across western North Carolina.
Officials said about 125 fire personnel spent the weekend and Monday working on more than a half-dozen blazes in the Nantahala and Pisgah National Forests.
Officials say the dry weather is contributing to the fire problems. Weather forecasters offer little relief in the next few days.
Deanna Younger with the Nantahala National Forest says dry conditions and warm temperatures are near historic levels.
The Forest Service on Monday listed the fire danger as “high” and stressed that no campfires are allowed, except in developed campgrounds that charge fees.
One major fire was reported Tuesday near Murphy. Another is northwest of Highlands. A third is burning northeast of Cullowhee. A fourth is near Franklin and a fifth is northwest of Sylva.
