Talk about a false narrative. The Washington Times’ Commentary editors would have us believe that only “elites” stand in the way of Republican unity — or, as that paragon of the “non-elite,” Newt Gingrich, quoted in Monday’s editorial puts it, only “these pseudo-intellectual right-wingers” (“The responsibility of the Republican elites,” Web, May 8).

But despite his coming out on top, Donald Trump has received only about 40 percent of Republican votes. There are an awful lot of the rank and file who do not support him. Many of us disagree with his policy views, where they can be discerned, and many are disgusted by the level of coarseness, vulgarity and utter lack of dignity Mr. Trump has brought to the campaign. These aren’t elitist views; these are the views of many life-long-Republican voters.

I agree with Speaker of the House Paul Ryan that Mr. Trump needs to try harder to unify the GOP. But the idea of bringing people together doesn’t seem to fit into his world view.
