A Georgia man was arrested early Wednesday by police investigating reports of someone in a clown costume smoking methamphetamine inside a downtown Waffle House.

An employee of the all-night eatery called Athens-Clarke County Police at about 4:15 a.m. Wednesday morning and said that a red-haired man “wearing a clown suit” had left “a bowl where he had smoked meth on the counter” before “locking himself in the bathroom,” according to the police report.

Police said they unlocked the bathroom door and found Jacob Worthington, 25, a Gainesville, Georgia, native and Afghan War veteran, smoking marijuana by the sink.

“He was fully dressed as a clown. I couldn’t believe it. But you see some weird stuff in downtown Athens,” a Waffle House employee, speaking anonymously, told The Daily Beast.

Inside the restroom, Mr. Worthington reportedly told police he had a knife in his pocket, which they recovered, and admitted to owning the meth pipe that had been left at the counter. Police said they then found LSD as they searched him for contraband, as well as an identification card bearing the name “Jacob Worthington.”

When police searched the man’s backpack, they discovered “a digital scale and a jar of marijuana, a jar of mushrooms, a small golden keepsake containing marijuana and a small bag of white powder,” according to the report.

He was arrested and charged with possession with intent to distribute Schedule I and II narcotics, possession of Schedule I and II narcotics, possession with intent to distribute marijuana and possession of drug-related objects.

A 2009 news report said Mr. Worthington served in the U.S. Army with the 310 Psychological Operations Company based at Fort Gilliam. He left the Army in January 2014, The Daily Beast reported, citing what it said was the man’s Facebook profile.
