I’ve told my fellow Republicans and others repeatedly that my opinions on “The Donald” are still mixed. However, if I believed all the positives about him, we could be in for a very surprising and momentous victory should he win the presidency — particularly over a very flawed Democratic nominee.

I can’t fully explain the phenomenon that is Donald Trump, but he is obviously touching the right chord at the right time to get so many people to vote for him. If the crossover appeal continues in November and there is in the end Republican unity (which I think there will be, because sanity will prevail), Mr. Trump could not only win, but win big. He represents the defeat of “the establishment,” and that establishment won’t go quietly. Its members are still in denial, and the Democrats will continue to underestimate Mr. Trump.

Of course, nobody thought Mr. Trump would be around as long as he has been. Nobody thought he’d be the front runner, but he is. It is highly likely he will be the Republican nominee. And yet we still ask if those Trump delegates are really going to stick with him, and are surprised when most say they are. But even when you don’t fully understand something, it is better to try to understand it than to continue to be in denial.
