There is a legal debate raging between Apple and the government. But there is also a moral debate that could be considered even more important, perhaps more long-lasting and more defining than the legal one: Is security more important than privacy and liberty?

Some would suggest that we must be secure; we must protect ourselves at all costs, even if it means that the government can force a business to act against itself and may lead to even more risk in the future.

While all life is sacred, no one can be protected from every type of situation or tragedy every minute of every day. What you can be sure of is that every one of us will one day die. And none of us knows exactly when our natural deaths will occur or what the circumstances will be. So it is more important how we live.

As for me, whether I live another 30 minutes or another 30 years, I would rather live that time unencumbered by government, with my privacy intact. Most of all, I would rather live free.
