Sen. Ted Cruz was projected the winner in his home state of Texas, and neighboring Oklahoma, delivering him his second and third wins of the primary season and giving him an argument for staying in the race.

He won the Iowa caucuses last month.

Television networks called the races based on exit polling and early returns. Contests in several other states, where polls also closed, were too close to call.

Donald Trump opened the night with wins in the Deep South, Virginia and Massachusetts.
