Tyler Hoechlin has been cast for the role of Superman in season 2 of the CW’s “Supergirl” series, entertainment news site ComingSoon.net reported Thursday.

“Greg [Berlanti] and I have wanted to work with Tyler for ages, so this worked out perfectly because Tyler is Superman,” ComingSoon.net quoted the show’s Supergirl executive producer Andrew Kreisberg. “We are so thrilled and humbled to add another amazing actor to the legacy of this iconic character.”

The casting decision may come as a disappointment for Tom Welling fans who had taken to Change.org to petition for the former “Smallville” star to once again don the red cape.

Mr. Hoechlin, who played second base for UC Irvine, starred in this year’s Richard Linklater college-baseball comedy “Everybody Wants Some!!” Prior to that, he played a werewolf for four seasons of MTV’s “Teen Wolf.”
