Something as anodyne as a Facebook meme about garlic bread apparently can get some folks’ knickers in a twist, as the Brits might say.
“Garlic bread has picked a fight with the trans community and people are confused” declared the British newspaper Metro in a June 5 story. “Yes, garlic bread. The tasty side dish that was, until now, completely and utterly inoffensive.”
The Metro article then showed a screen capture of the Facebook page Garlic Bread Memes showing two slices of garlic bread with a caption reading, “If I had a slice of garlic bread for every existing gender:”
“Some have expressed their disappointment at the ’transphobia’ while others have taken aim at the ’politically correct brigade,’” Metro said of commenters on the meme Facebook page.
An unscientific poll question Metro asked of article readers currently shows almost 66 percent of respondents find the meme was “funny” compared to 8 percent who said it was “offensive.”
In 2014, Facebook loosened its gender options for profile pages, with ABC News counting some 58 different gender options.
Regardless of your views on transgender issues, that’s probably a lot harder to capture in a meme photo than two slices of bread.
