Donald Trump’s short list for a vice presidential pick just got shorter.
Sen. Bob Corker, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee whose foreign policy chops made him a top contender to be Mr. Trump’s running mate, pulled himself out of the running Wednesday.
“There are people far more suited for being a candidate for vice president, and I think I’m far more suited for other types of things,” the Tennessee Republican told The Washington Post.
Mr. Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, has been road-testing his possible picks. He appeared with Mr. Corker at a rally Tuesday in North Carolina.
Mr. Corker said that the event and a meeting with Mr. Trump and his family convinced him that he wasn’t built for a run as the vice presidential nominee.
“It’s a highly political job and that’s not who I am,” Mr. Corker told the newspaper. “We had a very open conversation about that and, actually, we have been very candid about it from the very beginning of our meetings. I left there feeling very good about him as a person but also realized that at age 63, I know the things I’m good at doing and knowing what a candidate for vice president has to do. It’s just not the right thing for me, and I don’t think it’s the right thing for them.”
