Youree Harris has died from cancer at the age of 53, TMZ reported Tuesday, citing a representative who worked for the late character actress.
Her name may not ring a bell, but Ms. Harris’s contribution to pop culture was as quintessentially ’90s as the Macarena or Tickle Me Elmo: She was the Jamaican-accent-sporting actress behind the 900-number necromancer Miss Cleo of the Psychic Readers Network.
The Federal Trade Commission demanded in 2002 that the Psychic Readers Network cancel $500 million in payments and fined the company $5 million, BuzzFeed reported in 2013.
The Psychic Readers Network was eventually driven out of business by the feds, but Ms. Harris was never charged with anything.
Ms. Harris, who was actually born in Los Angeles, also voiced a character in the 2002 video game, “Grand Theft Auto: Vice City” after her psychic days ended.
