Five days after the Mega Millions drawing gave away a $540 million jackpot, the Powerball lottery also continued Wednesday to edge into the kind of big-money “event” status when occasional lottery players start crowding convenience stores for tickets.
Officials drew numbers Wednesday for a $302.5 million jackpot in a contest that has not been won for ten weeks.
The winning numbers were 57-15-29-3-54, with the red Powerball being 10.
If taken in a single massive payment, as most recent big lottery winners have chosen to do, the $302.5 million Powerball prize would be worth $221.4 million. Federal taxes would quickly take almost 40 percent of that amount, with state taxes a possibility on top of that.
The $2 Powerball tickets are sold in 44 states, along with the District of Columbia and some U.S. territories.
On Friday, Mega Millions had a winner for the first time since early March, with the $540 million prize being the third-biggest in that lottery’s history. According to Hoosier Lottery officials, the winning ticket was sold at a Speedway station off Interstate 70 in Cambridge City, Indiana. As of Wednesday night, the owner of winning ticket had not come forward.
