Former acting CIA Director Michael Morell stated over the weekend on CBS’s “Face The Nation” that the situation is Afghanistan looks challenging going forward as the Taliban have made significant gains since the drawdown of U.S. forces in the Mideast country by the Obama administration.

“So I think one big challenge is going to be the reemergence of Afghanistan as an issue. The Taliban have made major gains over the last year,” Morell said. “I would expect similar gains going forward. They control more territory now than they have in a number of years. I think the debate on how many troops we keep in Afghanistan is going to reopen. General Campbell already last week said we need upwards of 10,000 troops, which is double the number the president is currently looking at.”

The situation in Afghanistan seems to be following the arc of the scenario in Iraq after the withdrawal of American forces from that country. The mother of all power vacuums was created. Bad actors filled that vacuum. American influence was reduced to almost zero where thousands of brave soldiers died and trillions of dollars were expended. The United States will end up right where it started, with a terrorist nation in place, bent to do America harm, which is the reason we went into the area in the first place after 9/11.
