GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump indicated Thursday morning that he’s been contacted by two candidates who want to come to his “special event” Thursday evening in Iowa that’s to be held at the same time as the main GOP presidential debate.
“Wow, two candidates called last night and said they want to go to my event tonight at Drake University,” Mr. Trump tweeted Thursday morning.
Mr. Trump has announced a “special event” to benefit veterans at 9 p.m. (ET) — the same time the main stage debate is scheduled to start.
Mr. Trump has said he doesn’t think Fox News host Megyn Kelly would be a fair moderator, and has objected to a tongue-in-cheek statement the network put out earlier this week in response to his threats not to participate.
Participants scheduled for the 9 p.m. debate include Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, Ohio Gov. John Kasich and Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky.
The earlier, “undercard” debate starts at 7 p.m. (ET) and is slated to include former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania and former Virginia Gov. James S. Gilmore III.
