A Minnesota girls basketball team say they were forced out of the league after officials determined they were too good and were intimidating the other teams.
The Northwest Suburban Basketball League decided to kick the Rogers Area Youth Basketball Association girls high school team out of the league after their 3-0 winning streak, a local Fox News affiliate reported.
“We found out Friday at lunchtime that we’re not going to be allowed because according to the league our girls were too talented,” coach Jason Hanauska told the station.
Sherri Palmgren and other parents got a letter from the head of their association that said, “The Northwest Suburban Basketball League has decided RAYBA does not fit into the league. The main reason they made this decision is because other teams do not want to play RAYBA due to the skill level.”
“This is absurd,” Ms. Palmgren told the station. “Do we take the Patriots or Cardinals, who are going to the championship game, and kick them to the curb because they’re too good?”
The league ejected the team just ahead of a showcase tournament over the weekend.
“Are we supposed to play worse just to make them happy?” said team member Tessa McCarthy.
Mr. Hanauska plans to meet Monday with the league’s board.
