I was in total disbelief when I read recently that a student brought a loaded gun into Nicholas Orem Middle School in Hyattsville, Md. After all, how is this possible when Prince George’s County Schools are ’gun-free zones’?

This incident just shows how toothless, feckless and harmful these zones are. They actually have the opposite effect of that which is intended, because they render our schoolchildren and educators vulnerable in any attack carried out by a mad person. If school authorities on-site were equipped with firearms, our children and their teachers would have a chance at survival. ’Gun-free zones’ get people killed.
